Variety Show Practice

We have worked hard this term to create a performance for the school wide Variety Show. Wow we have made good progress since we started. Here is a recent sneak peak at our wonderful performance! If you can come along next Wednesday night, or Thursday afternoon you will get to see some amazing acts! One of our first practices. We are learning to develop our sense of togetherness, or kotahitanga.

Piupiu: Learn, Create, Share

Prototyping: We are learning about piupiu from a design perspective. We understand that piupiu means 'swish' and that the noise is important to keep singers in time. We are working to create piupiu inspired skirts for the variety concert. At the moment we are looking at how our designs will swish the best, and how they will be made to fit.

Problem Solving Friday

Using materials to solve tricky brain teasers! Interactive options was another way to explore their thinking.

Youthtown Sports

A fun team building game with the people from Youthtown. Everyone enjoyed working together to protect their line from the soccer ball. We are using our fitness time to learn about kotahitanga. Working as team, playing fair and being a supportive team player. Using a variety of movements and sports skills to play relays, the students are keen to participate in some friendly yet competitive races!

Animation: Te Ika a Maaui

Here is one student's work using the animation skills we are learning from Miss Knock during our digital learning time. We read The Fish of Maui and studied te reo Māori within the story. We also discussed the illustrations, highlighting the use of warm and cool colours to create a striking contrast. We understood that the artist had used plants and shapes unique to Aotearoa so that the reader could clearly identify the setting of the story.

Multiplication

We are have been learning about multiplication, and how we can understand different problems by thinking about how many rows we have, and how many objects we have in each row. We are all really enjoying using creative thinking to get an answer.

Problem Solving

We had lots of fun trying to figure out Maths riddles!

Room 12 Science News!

One of our plants had an unexpected guest...

On the 22nd of March 2018 a caterpillar was discovered in Room 12.
It looks like our new friend is enjoying our pak choi plant!

Our new guest is REALLY enjoying the taste of our pak choi plant.
The caterpillar ate a whole leaf in one night!

Swimming Lessons 2018

We were lucky to have professional swim instructors teaching us water skills for two weeks during Term 1.
Everyone enjoyed the challenge and refreshing afternoon dip!

ANZAC Day: Learn, Create, Share

We learned about what it meant to be an ANZAC soldier. We completed our own research, and created Visual Art that reflected the significance of the poppy flower. We used our prior knowledge making crystals for science along with technology and creative thinking, to make sculptures that reflect ANZAC day. We had a bugle, a helicopter, poppies, and words made. Some are hanging in our classroom window. We also used our maths skills to make ANZAC biscuits. We studied measurement and together we doubled the recipe.

Te reo

We are learning how to identify simple shapes and colours in te reo. We created a digital picture to share our learning and visual art.

Growing Crystals

We learned that it is important to have a saturated solution when making crystals from borax.
We learned how the borax particles disperse in hot water, then reform on the nearest structure. We all thought very hard about our pipe cleaner designs that will collect borax particles, and make crystals!
